One of the things you notice right away about Iceland is that the country seems to be deeply in love with licorice. It may or may not be true, as one of my classmates suggested, that people who don’t like licorice are subject to immediate deportation … but why push your luck?
There’s chocolate-covered licorice, salted licorice, licorice wrapped in (or wrapped around) all sorts of fruits and confections, licorice-flavored schnapps (the infamously-powerful Brennivin, fondly known as “Black Death”), and even licorice-flavored cappuccino. That last one is surprisingly good, and (not surprisingly) available all over Reykjavik. Something to look forward to when you visit!
